Many have said that societies can only be judged by the way they treat their members most in need. While the federal government maintains the Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs to provide benefits for individuals disabled from working full-time, a harsh reality exists in the form of a myriad of obstacles and pitfalls in the process of simply obtaining benefits. Examples of problems facing disability applicants include:
•The majority of individuals applying for benefits have their applications initially denied.
•Most of those in this group will typically need to wait well over a year to finally have their case heard by a judge.
•Those who are denied benefits by a judge might wait yet another year for the Appeals Council to review that decision.
•The outcomes of nearly identical cases may vary greatly depending on the office/decision-maker.
•Failure to obtain updated medical records in time for hearings can further delay decisions and jeopardize outcomes.
While some of these problems are possibly beyond our control, those members of our society who are most in need deserve a representative who will advise them thoroughly and advocate for them effectively. My practice is therefore focused on providing:
1) Personalized service at every stage of the disability process
2) Clear standards memorialized in a written fee agreement, outlining exactly what services I will provide
3) A systematic yet practical approach to understanding what factors achieve a favorable outcome in disability cases.
